Check for a California Contractor License
Any chimney company doing repair or installation work in California must hold a valid Contractors State License Board (CSLB) number. You can verify a license at cslb.ca.gov in about 30 seconds. Cleaning-only companies are not required to hold a CSLB license, but a reputable one will have it anyway.
Look for CSIA Certification
The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) certifies technicians who pass a written exam on chimney systems, safety codes, and inspection standards. Ask whether the technician performing your service is CSIA-certified. This is separate from the company being licensed.
Ask for Proof of Insurance
A chimney company should carry general liability insurance and workers compensation. If a technician falls from your roof and the company is uninsured, you may be liable. Ask for a certificate of insurance before the appointment.
Questions Worth Asking Before You Book
- What does the sweep include? (Cleaning only, or cleaning plus inspection?)
- Do you provide a written report with photos?
- How do you handle Stage 2 or Stage 3 creosote if you find it?
- What is the flat-rate price, and what triggers extra charges?
- Can I see your CSLB license number?
Red Flags to Watch For
- Flyers offering sweeps for $49 or less with no other pricing information
- No physical business address
- High-pressure upselling during the appointment before the cleaning is done
- Verbal-only repair recommendations with no written estimate
- Cash-only payment
