What Happens During a Chimney Sweep

Our technicians lay protective drop cloths, inspect the firebox and damper, then clean the entire flue using flexible poly rods and steel or poly brushes sized for your chimney. A HEPA vacuum captures debris at the firebox opening. After sweeping, we perform a basic visual inspection and provide a written summary of chimney condition.

How Creosote Builds Up

Every time you burn wood, combustion byproducts rise through the flue and condense on cooler chimney walls. Over time, these deposits harden into creosote, a highly flammable substance. Stage 1 creosote is flaky and easy to brush away. Stage 2 is tar-like and requires specialized tools. Stage 3 is a glazed, shiny coating that may require chemical treatment or flue liner replacement.

Frequency and Pricing

The Chimney Safety Institute of America recommends sweeping when creosote deposits reach 1/8 inch or more. For most households that burn wood regularly, that means an annual sweep. Eco Grizzly offers transparent, flat-rate pricing with no hidden fees.

Chimney Sweep FAQs

Common questions answered by our certified technicians.

A standard chimney sweep takes 45 to 90 minutes depending on the level of buildup and chimney height.
No. We use HEPA-filtered vacuums and protective drop cloths to contain all soot and debris during the cleaning process.
The National Fire Protection Association recommends a minimum of one inspection per year. If you burn wood regularly, an annual sweep is recommended when creosote deposits reach 1/8 inch thickness.
Gas fireplaces produce far less residue than wood, but they still need annual inspection. Carbon deposits, dust, and pet hair accumulate in the burner and flue. We recommend an annual cleaning and safety check for all gas fireplace systems.
Creosote is a combustion byproduct that builds up inside chimney flues when wood is burned. It is highly flammable and is the leading cause of chimney fires in the United States. Regular chimney sweeping removes creosote before it reaches dangerous levels.
