The Bait-and-Switch Sweep
A common scam starts with a flyer or online ad offering chimney sweeps for an unrealistically low price, sometimes as low as $49 or $79. Once inside your home, the technician "discovers" urgent safety issues and pressures you into expensive, often unnecessary repairs.
Red Flags to Watch For
- Prices significantly below market rate
- No physical business address
- No California contractor license number on their website or invoice
- High-pressure sales tactics during the service visit
- Unwillingness to provide a written report before quoting repairs
- Cash-only payment requirements
How to Verify a Chimney Company
- Check for a valid California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) number
- Look for CSIA certification
- Read reviews on Google, Yelp, and the Better Business Bureau
- Ask for references from recent local customers
- Get at least two written estimates before authorizing major repairs
