Safe and Festive: Holiday Fireplace Safety

Pre-Season Preparation

Schedule a chimney sweep and inspection before the holiday season begins. A clean, inspected chimney is the foundation of safe fireplace use. If you have not used your fireplace since last winter, an inspection catches any off-season damage.

Decoration Safety

Keep stockings, garlands, and other decorations at least 12 inches away from the firebox opening. Never hang decorations from the mantel if they drape toward the fire. Use battery-operated candles instead of real candles near combustible decorations.

Burning Safety Tips

  • Only burn seasoned hardwood, never wrapping paper, cardboard, or treated wood
  • Use a fireplace screen to contain sparks
  • Never leave a fire unattended, especially with children or pets
  • Let the fire burn down completely before going to bed
  • Dispose of ashes in a metal container with a tight lid, stored outdoors

Carbon Monoxide Precautions

Make sure your carbon monoxide detectors are working and have fresh batteries. Open the damper fully before lighting a fire. If you smell gas or feel dizzy, leave the house immediately and call 911.

After the Holidays

Close the damper when the fireplace is not in use to prevent heat loss. Schedule a post-season sweep if you burned wood frequently during the holidays.
