Increased Use, Increased Risk
Winter means more fires, more creosote, and more thermal stress on chimney components. Problems that were minor in summer can become serious under heavy use.
Common Winter Chimney Problems
- Creosote buildup: Heavy burning creates rapid creosote accumulation
- Draft problems: Cold outdoor air can create downdrafts that push smoke indoors
- Crown and cap damage: Rain and cold temperatures exploit existing cracks
- Condensation: Temperature differentials cause moisture to form inside the flue
Prevention Strategies
- Start the season with a clean, inspected chimney
- Burn hot, clean fires to minimize creosote formation
- Warm the flue before each fire by holding a lit newspaper near the damper opening
- Keep the cap in place to prevent rain and animal entry
- Address any repair recommendations from your fall inspection
Emergency Signs
If you hear a loud roaring sound, see sparks or flames coming from the chimney top, or notice intense heat on walls near the chimney, you may have a chimney fire. Close the damper, leave the house, and call 911 immediately.
