A chimney cap is one of the most cost-effective ways to protect your chimney. It prevents rain from entering the flue, blocks birds and raccoons from nesting, stops sparks and embers from landing on your roof, and reduces downdrafts. Eco Grizzly installs single-flue and multi-flue caps in stainless steel, galvanized steel, and copper.

Types of Chimney Caps

Single-flue caps fit over one flue tile. Multi-flue or top-mount caps cover the entire chimney crown and protect multiple flues. Draft-increasing caps use wind-driven turbines or aerodynamic profiles to improve draft. Decorative copper caps add curb appeal while providing full protection.

Why Every Chimney Needs a Cap

An uncapped chimney is an open hole in your roof. Rain water enters the flue and accelerates mortar erosion, rusts the damper, and stains the firebox. Animals see an uncapped flue as a warm, sheltered nesting site. Sparks and embers that escape an uncapped chimney land on the roof and nearby vegetation, creating a fire hazard that is especially serious during Southern California wildfire season. A cap eliminates all of these risks for a fraction of the cost of the damage they cause.

Our Installation Process

We measure the flue tile or chimney crown dimensions, fabricate or select the correct cap size, and mount it with masonry screws or adhesive depending on the crown material. Mesh screening on every cap meets the California spark arrestor requirement of half-inch openings. After installation, we check the cap from ground level for aesthetic alignment and verify that the damper still operates freely.

Chimney Cap FAQs

Common questions answered by our certified technicians.

Stainless steel caps last 15 to 20 years or more. Galvanized caps typically last 5 to 10 years before showing corrosion. Copper caps can last a lifetime with minimal maintenance.
A properly sized cap does not reduce draft. In fact, some wind-directional and turbine-style caps improve draft by creating negative pressure at the chimney top during windy conditions.
California building code requires a spark arrestor with openings no larger than half an inch on all chimneys serving solid-fuel appliances. A chimney cap with built-in mesh screening satisfies this requirement.
