Fireplace Damper Repair and Replacement

Throat-mount dampers sit inside the firebox at the base of the smoke chamber. They are prone to warping and corrosion. Top-mount dampers seal the flue at the chimney top with a spring-loaded stainless steel lid operated by a cable inside the firebox. They provide a tighter seal, double as a rain cap, and are easier to operate.

An open or broken damper is like leaving a window open year round. Conditioned air escapes up the chimney in summer and winter, increasing HVAC workload and energy bills by up to 30 percent. A top-mount damper with a silicone rubber gasket creates a near-airtight seal that stops this energy loss. For throat-mount repairs, we clean the damper frame, replace warped plates, lubricate pivot pins, and adjust the handle mechanism. If the throat damper is beyond repair, we install a top-mount damper by attaching a stainless cable from the chimney top through the flue to a mounting bracket inside the firebox. The top unit seats against a rubber gasket for an airtight seal when closed and opens fully for fireplace use. Installation takes about two hours.
