Fireplace Firebox Repair and Rebuilding

Cracked firebricks and deteriorated mortar compromise fireplace safety. We repair and rebuild fireboxes to code.

The firebox is the combustion chamber where flames burn directly against refractory materials. Cracked firebricks, gaps in mortar joints, and spalled panels allow heat to transfer to combustible framing behind the fireplace. Eco Grizzly repairs individual firebricks, replaces factory refractory panels, and performs full firebox rebuilds using high-temperature firebrick and refractory mortar rated to 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit.

When to Repair vs. Rebuild

Single cracked bricks or small mortar gaps can be patched with refractory caulk or replaced individually. If multiple bricks are cracked, the back wall is bowed, or the firebox shows signs of heat damage to surrounding framing, a full rebuild is the safe choice.

Masonry vs. Factory-Built Fireboxes

Masonry fireboxes are built with firebrick and refractory mortar on site. They can be repaired brick by brick or rebuilt entirely. Factory-built (prefabricated) fireboxes use steel or cast refractory panels that bolt or snap into place. When panels crack, they must be replaced with manufacturer-specified parts. We service both types and keep common replacement panels in stock for brands like Heatilator, Superior, Majestic, and Marco.

Our Repair Process

We remove all loose and damaged material from the firebox, clean the substrate, and install new firebricks or panels with high-temperature refractory mortar. For full rebuilds, we lay a new firebrick floor, rear wall, and side walls on a bed of refractory mortar, maintaining proper clearances to combustible materials. After the mortar cures for 24 hours, we perform a controlled test fire to verify draft, smoke path, and structural integrity.
