A gas fireplace that will not ignite, shuts off unexpectedly, produces a strange odor, or heats unevenly needs professional diagnosis. The problem could be as simple as a failed thermocouple or as complex as a cracked heat exchanger. Eco Grizzly technicians are trained to service all major gas fireplace brands including Heat & Glo, Heatilator, Napoleon, Majestic, Regency, and Empire. We carry common replacement parts on our trucks for same-visit repairs whenever possible.

Common Gas Fireplace Problems

Pilot will not light: often caused by a failed thermocouple, thermopile, or clogged pilot orifice. Pilot lights but main burner does not ignite: usually a thermopile voltage issue or a faulty gas valve. Unit shuts off after a few minutes: the ODS (oxygen depletion sensor) may be triggering, or the high-limit switch may be tripping due to restricted airflow. Strange odor: could indicate a gas leak, dust burning off, or a venting problem. Cracked glass: must be replaced with manufacturer-specified tempered ceramic glass.

Our Repair Process

We begin with a full diagnostic that includes visual inspection, gas pressure measurement, millivolt testing of the thermocouple and thermopile, and a combustion analysis. Once we identify the root cause, we provide a written estimate before starting work. Most repairs are completed during the initial visit. We test all safety controls before leaving and verify proper flame characteristics.

Gas Fireplace Repair FAQs

Common questions answered by our certified technicians.

Natural gas is odorless. Utility companies add mercaptan (a sulfur compound) as a safety odorant. If you smell rotten eggs near your fireplace, turn off the gas valve, ventilate the room, and call us immediately. It could indicate a gas leak.
Yes. We install manufacturer-approved conversion kits that replace the burner orifice and regulator to match the new fuel type.
The most common causes are a worn thermocouple, a dirty pilot orifice, or a faulty gas valve. A weak thermocouple cannot generate enough voltage to hold the gas valve open. We test each component during diagnosis and replace only what is needed.
Most gas fireplace repairs are completed in a single visit lasting one to two hours. If a part needs to be ordered, we schedule a return visit as soon as the part arrives, usually within a few business days.
No. A malfunctioning gas fireplace can produce carbon monoxide, leak gas, or create a fire hazard. Turn off the unit at the gas valve and call for professional service before using it again.
